Each time a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
