Educating a Toddler to Grow into an 'British Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Investment?

Child education concept
The organization behind the listing states that what appears like "extravagance or peculiarity" is actually "deliberate investment in initial instruction".

"Parents located in the northern part of London is looking for an extraordinary and skilled educator to guide their youngest child on his early path to turning into an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this listing, you might readily skip the wording "beginning" as mere figurative language.

But, it might be the most important element of this unique position posting, as it attempts to hire a teacher for a one-year-old.

Hundreds of applications have now been received since the anonymous family advertised their search for the £180,000 per year tutor, who needs to be "an exceptional individual".

In recent few weeks, the listing has received interest throughout the media, with numerous questioning why?

Innovative Idea

The CEO, CEO and founder of Tutors International, which is assisting the family in their search, said that despite early doubt, he found the idea "visionary", and "progressive".

When he spoke with the family, he noted they understood the unusual aspect of their demand, and how young their son is.

However, they stated that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had postponed until their elder sibling was five, and by that age "cultural influence had already taken hold".

What precisely did the family indicate by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "everything", the expert replied. "The manner you eat, the way you speak".

He stated the elder child had absorbed "really subtle, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural habits. The family informed Adam they wished to avoid this pattern to repeat itself with their younger child.

The plan: To bring in a British tutor, who should speak with standard English accent, to influence the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency say the post has initiated a wider conversation about how parents view education, elitism and the part of family background in education.

Natural Absorption

"A great deal of the education at the start here is somewhat absorbed naturally," stated the expert.

It's via this natural absorption that the family are aiming the child will pick up the English characteristics they aim to instil.

The consultant noted the tutor had to be an individual who attended "the appropriate educational institutions – comparable categories of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The instructor simply needs to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be performing things they aren't even aware they're doing, just naturally," he added.

Cost Not Relevant

The family explained to Adam the chosen tutor should ideally also have understanding of or interest in horse riding, winter sports, creative fields and musical activities so as to shape the child in a broad spectrum of passions.

Furthermore though, he stated the family hoped the tutor to enrol the child on a variety of classes so the child would be "pony-riding and picking up an instrument by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's view, guiding their son develop into a "UK sophisticate" will result in achievement and create opportunities.

"For all the pros and cons of that, because it's certainly a class statement," he notes.

Yet, despite all this tutelage in "UK identity", would the child absorb what is termed cultural leaning from the multicultural family he resides with regardless?

"Yes", replied Adam. "They know this may not work, but they've simply adopted the view of, 'why not attempt it and we'll proceed as early as we can', because the expense of it is irrelevant," he said.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

A number of in the education sector who express similar concerns.

Another CEO, CEO and founder of Blue Education, who provides individual instructors, stated that "the process of embracing two identities, or in fact, forming one's identity, is something that must be lived into, not engineered."

Peter wrote that he had relocated from China to the United Kingdom at the age of seven, and had been raised understanding and living dual heritages. He continued to study at a prestigious UK institution.

The executive was the pioneer originating from mainland China to be elected to the post of Treasurer of the university debating society.

"The notion that an individual can function as a living vessel of UK identity, an individual who can possibly impart the attributes of a British gentleman onto a one-year-old child, strikes me as optimistic and unfeasible," he commented.

"From my perspective, having a distinctly British tutor from infancy will will not automatically achieve the goal they want.

"I never had that kind of mentor, and yet I have been fortunate enough to enjoy several of the situations they desire for their son."

He stated: "The fact is, cultural identity cannot be imposed from the outside influences; it must be chosen, and it must originate internally."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, UK identity is something the expert believes can be instructed – and marketed.

"I believe the fact that the world regards us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
